Under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998 the National Family & Parenting Institute has a legal duty to protect any information it collects about you. Please read on for more details about the privacy policy.

What information do we collect online?

We collect information in five ways from visitors to our websites.

1. Registration

You do not have to register to use our websites but if you would like to be kept up-to-date with our work you will need to submit your details via the Register online form.

The information we collect is:

  • Your first name
  • Your email address

This information is stored securely by our web-hosting company, and is retained until you choose to delete your registration. We use the information to produce aggregate statistical information about our website visitors and to email you to alert you about our work. You can visit our Register pages on the website and change your details at any time. If an email we send out to you is returned more than twice we will automatically remove your details from our database.
In addition to this essential registration information we may ask you to voluntarily supply further information about yourself so that we can collect more detailed data about our website users. This again will only be used to produce aggregate statistical information. If you tick our "help with publicity" box we will contact you to seek your permission to add your details to our PR contacts database.

2. Our Parents' Panel

If you choose to join our Parents' Panel your details will be stored securely by our web-hosting company and used by us to contact you about the Panel. We will only share your details with selected companies if you have given us permission to do this. If, at any time, you wish to leave the Parents' Panel or change your details, please contact us.

3. Feedback and Requests for Information

If you complete our online Feedback Form this is sent as an email to us. Once your enquiry has been responded to a "hard copy" of your message will be stored securely by the FPI for twelve months. If we receive a technical query regarding the site we may ask our web-hosting company to contact you directly.

If you make a request for further information about our work via our websites, a "hard copy" of your message will be stored securely by the FPI for twelve months.

If you submit a problem to Dear Deidre you should be aware that your email message is sent direct to Deidre's office at The Sun newspaper. The FPI is not responsible for the processing of your personal data at The Sun and you should consult their privacy statement for further information (http://www.thesun.co.uk/section/0,,24,00.html)

4. How You Can Help

The donate online facility collects payment information from you in order to process your donation. Your personal contact details will only be retained if you indicate that you would like to receive further information from us about our future work.

5. Site Usage Information

To help us to monitor and improve our websites we gather certain data about you when you visit them. This includes general information about your computer's operating system, browser and version, your IP address and/or domain name, your search engine (if you came to one of our sites via a search), and the pages of our website which you visit.

We may aggregate these statistics, traffic patterns and related site information and disclose this data to third parties for marketing, advertising or fundraising purposes but such aggregated data will not include any personal information.

A cookie is a small file which is stored on your computer's hard disk when you visit a website and will typically record a user's preferences. Cookies are used for our Registration system to enable you to use this section of our website. More information about cookies, including how to block them and/or delete them, can be found at AboutCookies.org. Please note that if you exercise your right to refuse cookies this may affect your access to this area of our website.

Occasionally we collect information from you via our quizzes and/or online surveys. If any of this information includes personal data we will only use it for aggregated analysis and statistical purposes. If however a survey or quiz is linked to a competition or other promotional feature we will use your details to administer the contest and notify winners and losers.
